Mitral Regurgitation and Severe Aortic Stenosis: Evidence-Practice Gap Analysis (VEGAS Study)

This is a retrospective, multi-centre cohort study which will investigate evidence-practice gaps in the treatment of secondary mitral regurgitation and severe aortic stenosis across six hospitals in Southwestern Ontario. By analyzing administrative and echocardiographic data, the study aims to quantify how many eligible patients are not receiving guideline-recommended interventions, uncover contributing factors (at system, patient and provider levels) and establish a foundation for future knowledge mobilization efforts.

The study’s Principal Investigator is Dr. JD Schwalm.

CarDIA-AI Study

The goal of the CarDIA-AI study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a centralized triage process using risk score-based screening for coronary artery disease in adults referred for non-urgent invasive imaging. This randomized controlled trial is currently underway at the Hamilton General Hospital and the Niagara Health System’s St. Catharines site. In tandem, CEBI is leading a process evaluation to explore how this triage model might be tailored and implemented across additional healthcare settings.

The study’s Principal Investigators are Dr. Jeremy Petch and Dr. JD Schwalm.

HIV Clinic: Outreach Prevention and Treatment (HCOPT) Project

Funded by the Ontario HIV Treatment Network, this project seeks to create a province-wide network of low-barrier clinics that integrate low-barrier HIV treatment and prevention with comprehensive addiction medicine services. The project will also evaluate how this network enhances data quality related to best practices, while fostering opportunities for shared learning and continuous quality improvement across the participating clinics. CEBI is responsible for the central research coordination of this study, and will lead all knowledge mobilization-related activities.

The study’s Principal Investigator is Dr. Tim O’Shea.

Injectable PrEP Project

Funded by the Ontario HIV Treatment Network, this project explores perspectives on injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among people who inject drugs (PWID), through a series of in-depth interviews. Injectable PrEP is a new long-acting method of HIV prevention, offering an alternative to daily oral PrEP. PWID participants will include individuals from at-risk populations sampled from harm reduction clinics representing northern communities in Ontario, and one community in southern Ontario. Findings from these interviews will help healthcare providers better understand potential barriers PWID may face in accessing injectable PrEP, should it become available in Canada. CEBI is responsible for the central research coordination of this study, and will lead all knowledge mobilization-related activities.

This study’s Principal Investigator is Dr. Tim O’Shea.

Nuance DAX Copilot Trial Evaluation

The Nuance Dragon Ambient Experience (DAX) Copilot is an AI-powered solution intended to support clinical documentation. The AI program is currently being piloted by clinicians across HHS. To support decision-making around its continued use, CEBI is leading a survey evaluation focused on clinician and patient experiences and satisfaction.

The project leads for this trial implementation are Prathiba Harsha and Dr. Rob Lloyd.
