The Quality Improvement (QI) & Patient Safety Education Program builds system-wide capability to improve the quality, safety, and value of care across Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS). Our goal is to equip clinicians, learners, and healthcare leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to apply improvement science to real clinical and system challenges.

Education – We provide foundational and advanced educational opportunities that introduce core QI and patient safety concepts, including: problem identification, measurement for improvement, human factors, change management, and evaluation of impact. These concepts are taught using established improvement frameworks, with a strong emphasis on translating theory into action within local clinical contexts. Building Capacity – A central focus of the program is capacity building. We engage physicians, nurses, trainees, clinical leaders, and interprofessional teams through mentorship, coaching, and methodological support. By pairing education with hands-on project development, we help learners move from curiosity to capability, and from isolated initiatives to scalable, system-level change.

Supporting and spreading improvement – We support learners in disseminating their work through presentations, publications, and institutional forums. This ensures that successful improvements extend beyond individual units and contribute to safer care across HHS. Through this work, the program enhances HHS’s reputation as a leader in QI education, patient safety, and learning health systems—positioning the organization to influence practice and policy at regional, national, and international levels.

As part of the broader Knowledge Centre, the QI & Patient Safety Education Program serves as a shared institutional resource. By aligning QI education under a unified framework, we strengthen collaboration, reduce duplication, and create a common language for improvement across the organization.
