The primary goal of the Knowledge Synthesis Program is to summarize best evidence using systematic reviews, and advanced statistical approaches including meta-analysis, network meta-analysis, trial sequential analysis and individual patient data meta-analysis. We will plan to accomplish this across clinical disciplines, taking advantage of expertise that already exists at HHS. To reach this goal, we will build capacity using junior faculty, students and residents. We will provide mentorship and methodological guidance to HHS researchers interested in participating in knowledge synthesis activities.
Beyond evidence synthesis, we have also developed expertise in producing trustworthy clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). This is accomplished using the GRADE (Grading Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach. This institute will provide an opportunity for shared infrastructure and resources and accentuate this expertise that already exists. By synergizing efforts, we will increase capacity and ensure proper branding of these activities under the HHS banner. Similar to evidence synthesis, there is ample opportunity for education around developing trustworthy guidelines and building capacity across disciplines that don’t traditionally participate in these activities. We believe that this work has the potential to impact clinical care worldwide and help accentuate the reputation of HHS as a national and international leader in evidence synthesis and guideline development.
